We are available to provide tours of the African American Heritage Trail to classes and groups interested in learning more about Sojourner Truth, 19th century Florence, and our rich local history.

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day Weekend, and the first Saturday of April through October, we sponsor free community tours of the African American Heritage Trail. Check our news posts, Facebook or Twitter, or sign up for our mailing list for announcements of upcoming tours.
Barbara Allen
My name is Barbara Allen, and I am the sixth-generation granddaughter of Sojourner Truth. When Sojourner walked away from slavery to freedom, she carried her daughter Sophia with her, who became my great-great-great-grandmother.
For the past several years, I have been the spokesperson for the family here in Battle Creek, Michigan. I have spent a lot of time in Kingston, New York, participating in special dedications and events. As a result, I have become well-acquainted with Sojourner’s history in Ulster County and the surrounding area.
However, I realize that I am less knowledgeable about her life after she converted and changed her name to Sojourner Truth. In my speeches, I often mention Massachusetts as a place Sojourner stopped on her way to Michigan. But after reading your website, I see that Florence was more than just a stop; it was considered home to her for a while.
I would love to visit, learn more, and tour the places that were part of her life. Can you send me information on your tours and the best time to visit.
I look forward to hearing from you
