About the Site

The site for the Sojourner Truth memorial statue was a former small city park at the corner of Pine & Park Streets in Florence. The city donated the site for the statue and final plans were approved by the Northampton Board of Public Works in November 2001

Welcome to the website of the Sojourner Truth Memorial Statue Committee.  In 1992 a group of citizens from many walks of life came together to create a memorial statue in Florence, MA to honor the life and work of Sojourner Truth, former slave, abolitionist and social activist who lived in Florence from 1843-56.  This website will tell you about Sojourner Truth and the important role she played in the history of equality and justice in our country.

The Committee works to promote an understanding of Sojourner Truth’s significance in American history.  We focus on educational and cultural events, working with area schools to incorporate Sojourner’s life story into history curriculum.  You will read about events that we sponsor to celebrate Sojourner’s work as well as noteworthy anniversaries of important events in the struggle for equality in our country.

The Sojourner Truth Memorial Committee is a 501(c)3 organization ("Committee for Northampton, Inc"); EIN 22-3529750.
